Trip Overview

The Gokyo Trek is one of the most beautiful short treks in Nepal's Everest region. This 11-day journey takes you from Kathmandu to Lukla and then through the peaceful villages, green forests, mountain trails, and high valleys of the Khumbu region. The trek passes through Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Dole, Machhermo, and finally reaches the beautiful Gokyo Valley.

The trek's main attraction is Gokyo Ri, which stands at 5,357 meters. From the top, you can enjoy a wide view of Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu, and other Himalayan peaks. You will also see the beautiful turquoise Gokyo Lakes surrounded by snowy mountains.

The trek includes an acclimatisation day in Namche Bazaar, which helps your body adjust to the increasing altitude. You will also experience the warm Sherpa culture, Buddhist prayer flags, monasteries, stone houses, and traditional mountain villages. The return journey follows the same beautiful route through Dole and Namche before reaching Lukla for the flight back to Kathmandu.

Trip Briefing

The Gokyo Trek is a great choice for trekkers who want to explore the Everest region without going all the way to Everest Base Camp. The route is quieter than the main Everest Base Camp trail and offers beautiful views of mountains, glaciers, lakes, and traditional Sherpa settlements.

After flying from Kathmandu to Lukla, the trek begins with a walk to Phakding. From there, you continue towards Namche Bazaar, the main trading and cultural centre of the Khumbu region. After a day exploring Namche and hiking to Everest View Hotel, the trail continues to Dole and Machhermo.

The landscape becomes more alpine as you gain altitude. From Machhermo, the trail reaches Gokyo Valley, where the views of the Gokyo Lakes and surrounding mountains become even more impressive. An early morning hike to Gokyo Ri is the highlight of the journey. After enjoying the mountain panorama, you return to Gokyo and retrace the trail to Lukla.

Your Gokyo Trek begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. During the flight, you can enjoy beautiful views of the hills, valleys, and Himalayan mountains. During peak trekking seasons, the flight may depart from Ramechhap instead of Kathmandu, depending on airport and flight arrangements. After landing at Lukla, you will meet your trekking guide and prepare for the first walk.

The trail from Lukla gradually descends and passes through small mountain settlements, green forests, suspension bridges, and farming areas. After several hours of walking, you reach Phakding, a peaceful village located beside the Dudh Koshi River. Weather conditions, flight schedules, trail conditions, local circumstances, and the walking pace of the group can sometimes affect the daily plan. Flights to and from Lukla are especially dependent on weather, and during busy trekking seasons, flights may operate from Ramechhap instead of Kathmandu. If there are any changes, our guide will manage the itinerary according to the situation without missing the main highlights of the trek. The walking hours mentioned for each day are approximate and may vary depending on trail conditions, rest stops, weather, and the pace of individual trekkers.
