Trip Overview

Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is a long and challenging trek in the eastern part of Nepal. The trail takes you into the remote Kanchenjunga region, where you walk through small mountain villages, forests, river valleys, rocky trails, and high alpine areas. Mount Kanchenjunga stands at 8,586 meters and is the third-highest mountain in the world. Since the region is far from the main tourist areas, the trail is quieter and you can enjoy a more peaceful trekking experience.

This 21-day trek takes you through the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area and covers both the northern and southern parts of the mountain. The trail passes through places such as Chirwa, Sekathum, Amjilosa, Gyabla, Ghunsa, Khangpachen, Lhonak, Pangpema, Cheram, Ramche, Tortong, and Yamphudin. The scenery changes a lot during the trek. You start with green hills and forests in the lower section and slowly move into the colder and more open mountain landscape.

The trek begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur and a long drive toward Taplejung. After reaching the trekking area, you start walking from the lower valleys toward Ghunsa. From Ghunsa, the trail goes higher to Khangpachen and Lhonak before reaching Pangpema, the main viewpoint on the northern side of Kanchenjunga. After returning to Ghunsa, you cross the high Sele La section and continue toward Cheram and Ramche on the southern side.

Along the way, you can see traditional mountain houses, prayer flags, mani walls, rivers, suspension bridges, and old trekking paths. The northern part of the region has a strong Tibetan Buddhist influence, especially around Ghunsa. The lower villages are home to different local communities, so the trek also gives you a chance to see the cultural diversity of eastern Nepal.

Spring and autumn are usually the main trekking seasons because the weather is more suitable and mountain views are often clearer. The trek is physically demanding because of the long walking days, high altitude, steep sections, and rough trails. Good preparation is important, especially for the higher parts of the route. With Universe Himalayan Treks, you can explore both sides of the Kanchenjunga region on one long trekking route.

Trip Briefing

Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is for trekkers who enjoy quiet trails and do not mind spending many days in remote mountain areas. Compared with Everest and Annapurna, the Kanchenjunga region has fewer trekkers and fewer modern facilities. Some villages have only a few teahouses, and services become very basic as you go higher.

The trail has a mix of uphill climbs, downhill walks, stone steps, suspension bridges, rocky paths, and narrow mountain sections. You also cross several forest areas before reaching the open alpine valleys. As you gain altitude, the trees become smaller and the mountains become more visible.

One of the main goals of the trek is Pangpema, where you can look toward the Kanchenjunga range. The southern side of the trek takes you toward Ramche and the Oktang area, giving you another view of the Kanchenjunga mountains. The Sele La section between the two sides is one of the harder parts of the route.
