Trip Overview

The Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek is one of Nepal's most remote and rewarding trekking journeys. It takes you deep into the eastern Himalayas, leading through traditional mountain villages, dense forests, alpine valleys, rocky landscapes, glaciers, and the spectacular Kanchenjunga North Base Camp at Pangpema.

Mount Kanchenjunga stands at 8,586 meters and is the world's third-highest mountain. North Base Camp, known as Pangpema, sits at around 5,143 meters and offers an impressive view of Kanchenjunga's northern face and the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

This 20-day trek starts from Kathmandu and continues toward eastern Nepal. Depending on your transportation arrangements, the journey usually includes a flight to Bhadrapur, followed by a long road trip to Taplejung and the trekking trailhead at Sekathum. From Sekathum, the trail follows the Ghunsa Valley through Amjilosa, Gyabla, and Ghunsa before entering the higher mountain region.

As you gain elevation, the landscape shifts from green forests and river valleys to alpine terrain. You pass through Ghunsa, Khambachen, and Lhonak before making the challenging day hike to Pangpema. The route to Pangpema follows a rugged glacial valley and provides increasingly impressive views of the Kanchenjunga massif.

The trek is more remote than many of Nepal's popular trekking routes. Accommodation is generally available in local teahouses and lodges along the northern route, although facilities become very basic in the higher settlements. Pangpema is not a typical overnight stop, so trekkers usually return to Lhonak after visiting the North Base Camp.

The Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek suits trekkers with good physical fitness and a willingness to walk for several hours each day in remote mountain terrain. The route includes steep sections, rocky trails, high-altitude walking, cold weather, and long trekking days.

With Universe Himalayan Treks, we organize the journey with experienced guides, transportation, accommodation, meals, permits, and other necessary arrangements. Our team stays with you throughout the trek and helps you enjoy the remote Kanchenjunga region safely and comfortably.

Important Note: The Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek is a challenging, remote, high-altitude route. The trail includes long walking days, steep climbs, rocky sections, and high-altitude terrain. The trek's highest point is Pangpema at around 5,143 meters. Pangpema is the North Base Camp viewpoint of Kanchenjunga and is normally visited as a day hike from Lhonak before returning to the lower overnight stop.Trekkers should be physically fit and comfortable with walking for around 5–8 hours on many days. Some days may take longer depending on the trail, weather, group pace, and altitude.Weather can change quickly in the Kanchenjunga region. Snow, rain, strong winds, cold temperatures, and poor visibility can affect the trail and transportation schedule. The upper section of the route is remote, and facilities become basic as you move higher. Lhonak is one of the highest overnight settlements on the route, while Pangpema itself is generally visited during a long day hike.Altitude sickness is another important concern. Walk slowly, drink enough water, eat properly, take enough rest, and always inform your guide if you feel unwell. Kanchenjunga trekking also requires the appropriate restricted-area and conservation-area permits, which a registered trekking agency normally arranges.Travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended.
